ESRD Choices: Kidney Failure: choosing a treatment option that is right for you

Your kidneys play a vital role in filtering waste from your blood and regulating other bodily functions. However, when your kidneys fail, you will need treatment to replace their normal function. At this point, you will be faced with important decisions about which treatment options to choose.

Your available choices include hemodialysis, which involves using a machine to filter your blood outside your body; peritoneal dialysis, which uses the lining of your abdomen to filter your blood inside your body; or kidney transplantation, where a new kidney is surgically implanted in your body. Each of these treatments has its own advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, the option you choose will have a significant impact on your lifestyle, such as your ability to continue working.

Basically, it is up to you to decide which treatment option is the best fit for your individual needs and priorities. Reading up on your options and discussing them with your healthcare team, family, and friends is a good way to make an informed decision. However, if you find that your initial choice isn’t working for you, you can always switch to a different treatment option.

In some rare cases, patients may choose to forgo kidney replacement therapy altogether and opt for conservative therapies with palliative care only.

When your Kidneys fail

It is important to recognize that when your kidneys fail, your body is no longer able to clean your blood, regulate your blood pressure, and produce hormones that keep your bones strong and your blood healthy. Consequently, harmful wastes can build up in your body, your blood pressure may rise, and your body may retain excess fluid while not producing enough red blood cells. Eventually, seeking treatment for kidney failure is vital to help you maintain good health and a good quality of life.
